A new opioid overdose reversal drug is now available in Mississippi by prescription only, but could that change?
Mississippi first responders have had an additional tool on their belts for nearly a year and a half now: Naloxone, also known as NARCAN.
“NARCAN pretty much helps block the, it’s a magnet for the Mu receptors within the human makeup and inside, and it helps block the effects of opioids,” assistant jail administrator for the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Barnett, said.
When someone calls first responders to an overdose, NARCAN is distributed through the nose to help stop the overdose reaction.
