MO: Clay County Sheriff’s Office issues warning on xylazine, which increases risk of fatal overdose

The Clay County, Missouri, Sheriff’s Office is warning residents after discovering xylazine in the area.

Commonly referred to as “tranq,” xylazine has been identified as a potent substance that significantly heightens the risk of fatal overdose.

It’s considered especially dangerous when it’s mixed in with fentanyl.

Xylazine is only approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for veterinary use.

The sheriff’s office also warns that Narcan has no effect on xylazine, though it should still be administered for those suspecting an overdose is happening.

Along with overdosing, injecting xylazine can lead to “soft tissue injuries” that could lead to amputation.
