KY: Paducah Police Deflection Team aims to free up police resources

To address drug use, support recovery, and reduce recidivism among individuals with substance use or mental health issues, the Paducah Police established the Deflection Team.

The team aims to divert these individuals from jail and connect them with community-based support systems. Allison Blackwell, a Western Kentucky native, and Officer Matthew Wentworth were appointed to the position on Wednesday.

Paducah Police Chief Brian Laird said the program has been in development since 2019. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country, the program was put on hold. However, after receiving state funding, the PPD launched the program and now aims to connect individuals with the proper resources and free up officers for other tasks.
